PSM (Process Safety Management)

Process Safety Management (PSM) is a regulatory framework for managing hazards associated with processes that use highly hazardous chemicals, preventing catastrophic releases and explosions.

What Is PSM?

Process Safety Management (PSM) applies to facilities that handle highly hazardous chemicals above threshold quantities. While rooted in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 in the United States, PSM principles are widely applied in Canadian process industries including oil and gas, petrochemical and chemical manufacturing.

14 Elements of PSM

PSM programs typically address: employee participation, process safety information, process hazard analysis, operating procedures, training, contractors, pre-startup safety review, mechanical integrity, hot work permits, management of change (MOC), incident investigation, emergency planning, compliance audits and trade secrets.

PSM vs. OHS

While OHS broadly covers worker safety, PSM specifically targets the prevention of catastrophic events - explosions, toxic releases and fires - that can affect workers, communities and the environment simultaneously.
