PPE Inspection Tips

Head Protection

Check shell for cracks, dents or UV degradation
Inspect suspension straps for fraying or stretching
Replace after any significant impact
Replace every 5 years (sooner if manufacturer specifies)

Eye/Face Protection

Look for scratches, pitting or cracks on lenses
Verify ANSI Z87.1 marking is still legible
Check that frames fit snugly and side shields are intact
Clean lenses before each use for full visibility

Hand Protection

Check for punctures, tears or chemical degradation
Verify correct glove type for the specific chemical/hazard
Ensure proper fit (too loose reduces grip and dexterity)
Replace chemical-resistant gloves per manufacturer breakthrough times

Foot Protection

Inspect soles for excessive wear or separation
Check steel/composite toe caps for deformation
Verify EH rating label is intact if electrical hazard present
Replace when midsole compression reduces impact protection

Respiratory Protection

Perform fit check (positive and negative pressure) before each use
Inspect valves, straps and face seal for damage
Check cartridge/filter expiry and replacement schedule
Ensure annual fit testing is current per OSHA 1910.134

Fall Protection

Inspect webbing for cuts, burns, chemical damage or fraying
Check D-rings and buckles for distortion or corrosion
Verify labels and inspection tags are current
Remove from service immediately after any fall arrest event

PPE Selection Hierarchy

PPE should always be the last line of defense. Follow the hierarchy of controls:

Elimination: Remove the hazard entirely
Substitution: Replace with a less hazardous material or process
Engineering controls: Isolate workers from the hazard (ventilation, guarding, barriers)
Administrative controls: Change work procedures, training, signage, rotation schedules
PPE: Personal protective equipment as the final layer of protection
