Break Down the Job, Find the Hazards

A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) breaks a task into individual steps, identifies the hazards at each step, and documents the controls needed to keep workers safe. It is a fundamental tool for construction safety planning.

How to Complete a JHA

  1. List each step of the task in sequence
  2. Identify hazards associated with each step
  3. Determine controls for each hazard (elimination, substitution, engineering, admin, PPE)
  4. Review with workers before starting the task
  5. Update when conditions or procedures change
