Break Down the Job, Find the Hazards
A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) breaks a task into individual steps, identifies the hazards at each step, and documents the controls needed to keep workers safe. It is a fundamental tool for construction safety planning.
How to Complete a JHA
- List each step of the task in sequence
- Identify hazards associated with each step
- Determine controls for each hazard (elimination, substitution, engineering, admin, PPE)
- Review with workers before starting the task
- Update when conditions or procedures change
