Incident

An incident is any unplanned event in the workplace that results in, or has the potential to result in, injury, illness, property damage, or environmental harm.

What Is a Workplace Incident?

A workplace incident encompasses any unplanned event - from a minor first-aid case to a fatality and from equipment damage to environmental spills. The term is deliberately broad: it includes injuries, illnesses, property damage, near misses and dangerous occurrences.

Incident Classification

  • First Aid: Requires only on-site first-aid treatment.
  • Medical Aid: Requires treatment by a medical professional.
  • Lost Time: The worker misses one or more scheduled shifts.
  • Restricted Work: The worker is assigned modified duties.
  • Fatality: A death resulting from a workplace event.
  • Property/Environmental: Damage to equipment, facilities, or the environment.

Incident Investigation

Every incident should be investigated to determine root causes and implement corrective actions. The depth of investigation should be proportional to the severity and potential severity of the event.
