JSA (Job Safety Analysis)
A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is a procedure that integrates health and safety principles into a particular task by breaking the task into steps, identifying hazards and recommending safe work procedures.
What Is a JSA?
A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is functionally equivalent to a Job Hazard Analysis (JHA). The terms are often used interchangeably. A JSA focuses specifically on the relationship between the worker, the task, the tools and the work environment to proactively identify and mitigate hazards before work begins.
When to Use a JSA
- New jobs or tasks being performed for the first time.
- Jobs that have produced injuries or near misses.
- Jobs with the potential for severe injury or illness.
- After changes in equipment, materials, or processes.
JSA Best Practices
- Involve the workers who actually perform the task - their hands-on knowledge is essential.
- Observe the job being performed rather than relying solely on written procedures.
- Keep steps action-oriented (start each step with a verb).
- Review JSAs at least annually and after any incident or near miss.
